11/13/2006: "Veterans Day- Nov. 11"

medals (135k image)

This year there was a call for America's veterans to wear their military medals on Veterans Day, November 11, 2006. Wearing their medals will demonstrate the deep pride our veterans have in their military service and bring Veterans Day home to all American citizens.

These were Uncle Bernard's medals- A Purple Heart and a Silver Star.

The Purple Heart is awarded in the name of the President of the United States to any member of an Armed Force or any civilian national of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Services after 5 April 1917, has been wounded or killed, or who has died or may hereafter die after being wounded. The Purple Heart differs from all other decorations in that an individual is not "recommended" for the decoration; rather he or she is entitled upon being wounded or killed.

The Silver Star is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States not justifying a higher award. It may be awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the U.S Armed Forces, distinguishes him or herself by extraordinary heroism.

There is a lot of differing opinions on the war but I think we can all say we are pround of our veterans and what they give to keep us free.

Maybe because I am a vet but this is impressive- we all thought Bernard was "unique" but he truly was a hero.

It is amazing to know that we have a hero in the family. Very cool.
