12/21/2007: "Letter from my principal to all staff..."

This year, Ms. DiSanto proposed “doing Christmas” differently than in the past. We collected gift cards to distribute to our families in need. After taking care of those families who requested support, we identified a handful of families who we knew were struggling, yet did not ask for assistance. They were making their lives work through a variety of personal and financial challenges.

Today, my office has been overwhelmed by these families sharing the most sincere touching gratitude imaginable. A grandparent of one of the families reached out to say thank you because “her daughter never would have asked for the help, but is in such need.” When called about picking up their surprise gift, every family gushed with surprise and thanks. Finally, one family wrote a special letter of thanks and gratitude. I have posted this letter by the mailboxes for all to read. WARNING: Read with a tissue in hand.

Ms. DiSanto’s new way of “doing Christmas” has been a success. Not because it was easier, but because it allowed us to recognize and support families who don’t ask for help, and feel truly blessed by this small Christmas present. For these families, and many others, Hawthorn Elementary makes a difference.

Thanks, Ms. DiSanto, for helping us bring back the real meaning of Christmas and giving with this new Holiday Support Plan.

We are all so proud of you for all the good you do for people. Sometimes a parent can throw their chest out and say, "By God, I did teach them something." Or at least I hope we helped teach. A lot of it just comes from within and you have what it takes. Thank you for being the person that you are. Mom

This is no suprise to us! You just extend your love and caring to anyone around you. Just try to remember this outcome in the future, when you are frustrated that something isn't working out the way you want it to. You do make a huge difference to all you reach out to!
