02/20/2008: "Appreciate what you have..."

The text that originated this movie was published on May 29, 1990 with the title “State of the Village Report”, and it was written by Donella Meadows, who passed away in February 2000. Nowadays Sustainability Institute, through Donella’s Foundation, carries on her ideas and projects. The Miniature Earth project was first published in 2001, since then more than 2 million people have seen this website.

This is pretty amazing, and sometimes hard to believe. Most of us have never really seen poverty and what they speak of. I was lucky enough to see it first hand in the Dominican Republic. Most of the people there live in shacks... literally, run-down shacks that are about the size of your living room with a roof barely on. It made me cry. I had serious culture shock. I truly learned to appreciate the things I have after visiting (especially a toilet seat and hot water). It's also what set me on a path to simplification in my life. I still splurge on the things I love (art, scrapbooking, reading), but I try to remember the things I do have and have been lucky enough to obtain. I thank God every day.
