09/07/2008: "Stand up for cancer..."

standup (143k image)

On September 5, over 50 of the most renowned personalities in TV, film, sports and music came together to make history. In an unprecedented television event, NBC, ABC, and CBS simultaneously devote 1 hour of commercial-free prime time to raise funds for the fight against cancer.

How can we give...Kris is leading a Team in a cancer walk called Carrier Cares.

"I am leading a cancer walk for a fellow colleague of mine that has been trying to beat breast cancer. We have a 5K walk on Sept 27 that me, Darian and Mattie are all doing as well as several Carrier people. I am the team captain (see I have a theory when things are in the toilet in other aspects of your life - job, lovelife, kids etc you do things for others and you feel better - yes you can drink a beer too but if you do both you feel awesome!) Digressing sorry! However I did want to pass along because you are special caring people in my life and if you wanted to participate or donate it’s a good cause - no pressure but wanted to make you aware.
I have attached the link for our team - its called Carrier Cares. Right now we have about 15 people walking which is great - anyone local who would like to do it can contact me and I can register you.
The link below will also allow you to donate online if you want.

We used to have such crazy dreams.
The kind of dreams that brought us together, made us not mere mortals, but a movement.
We used to dream we'd get to the moon.
And we were crazy enough, fanatical enough, relentless enough, to get there.
We dreamed we'd split the atom.
Make smallpox and polio whispers from forgotten history books.
Make technology infinite, individual.
Connect the world.
All the unbelievable and the impossible,
all the can't do and the never will, we overwhelmed them, we overpowered them, we conquered them.
They said no and we, well,
We said yes.
We stood up.
We stood up and changed the world.
Stand up when everybody else sits down
Stand up when it's easier to turn away
Stand up for everyone who can't rise anymore
When the answer seems impossible, stand up
When the dream is right within our reach, stand up
When the powerful refuse your call, stand up
The moment is now and the time has come to stand up.
One out of every two men
One out of every three women
will face these diseases we call cancer.
Our sisters, our brothers, our fathers, our mothers,
our husbands, our wives, our children.
Our very best friends and those we've yet to meet.
One person every minute, one person in a moment gets lost, gets stolen, gets taken away.
We are a tapestry of lives touched and brought together by a terrorist we can actually find. And in the time it's taken to read this, three more Americans have died.
Unforgivable.
This is where the end of cancer begins.
When together we become a force unmistakable.
A movement undeniable.
A light that cannot dim.
When we take our wild impossible dreams
And make them possible
Make them true
When together we rise as one
When we stand up
When we Stand Up To Cancer.

Okay, the Starbucks reference got me... although actually I have not had one in a very long time. I went and gave $15. It is worth it and I can certainly afford a small amount for the health of my Aunt Leona. I will still walk with the girls too.

Come on people- this is worth it- to stop a disease that kills our loved ones- a no brainer! It doesn't have to be a lot- $1.00 or $5.00- give up your Starbucks one day.
Kris, Darian and Matty- Linda & I donated to each one of you in memory of Lu and Ralph. Thanks for making a difference.

This is so fantastic and I'm so glad that you started this. Since money is tough, I will do the walk with you girls. I will do it to honor my Aunt Nonie, who is fighting this disease too.

The Susan B. Komen one is Oct. 4 here. I did those walks for several years in Winston and they are very moving events. It is just one way that we can help give back and fight together for a cure.

Go Kris- I'm glad you sent the email because I was getting ready to send money to "Stand Up to Cancer" and now I can send it to you. Is it easier to mail to you or go online.
Let's kick the shit out of this disease!
