PLEASE Keep My Kids in your thoughts and prayers...

baileygang (146k image)

I got a phone call from Sarah tonight that her grandfather died this morning. (Tim's Dad). I spoke to all three of them and they are very hurt and disbelieving at this time, even though they knew it was coming. Howard's health has been deteriorating the past two years and in the ICU 3 times in the past 5 months or so. If you could please keep them in your thoughts and prayers that would be great. They are hurting.....and need BOTH OF THEIR FAMILIES! Thanks...... If you want numbers to talk to them let me know they all have cells......

Fun 2 days...

catch (71k image)

Linda and I have not been out of the house (doing fun things) in about 3 weeks due to weather.

Yesterday we went to Penzey's for spices, Cinzetti's to eat, went to Whole Foods Market and got Linda a new pair of shoes (Crocs that are a whole shoe with leather that ties- pretty cool).

Today we went to the Cinemark VIP room and watched "Catch & Release". They serve your drinks and food at your seat and you can recline- very comfortable and enjoyable. The movie was good and then we did a little shopping. We then came home and made potato soup which was outstanding and warmed us up (only 10 degrees here today). It was a very pleasent weekend. Need to rest up as I am currently teaching Tuesdays and have 3 families through the court to work with, Thursday I get my crown and Friday is a professional development day- so the weeks are busy. Nice to relax for 2 days!

For those who might want to make soup...

1/2 stick butter
1 small onion, diced
2 medium carrots, diced about the same size as the onion
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
8 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 cups milk, whole, reduced fat (2 percent) or low fat (1 percent)
2 chicken bouillon cubes, dissolved in 1/2 cup hot milk
1 cup half-and-half
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Crumbled bacon bits, for garnish
Grated sharp Cheddar, for garnish

In a 4-quart saucepan, melt the butter and saute the onion and carrots until both are slightly tender, about 5 minutes. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Add the potatoes, milk, and dissolved bouillon cubes. Cook over medium heat for 15 minutes, until the potatoes are very soft and some of them have begun to dissolve into mush. Add the half-and-half, salt, and pepper.

Serve soup sprinkled with bacon bits and grated cheese.

Life is a gift...

gift1 (19k image)

There was a blind girl who hated herself because of her blindness Not only did she hate herself but she hated everyone else, except her loving boyfriend. He was always there for her. She said that if she could only see the world, she would marry her boyfriend.
One day, someone donated a pair of eyes to her and then she could see everything, including her boyfriend.
Her boyfriend asked her, "now that you can see the world, will you marry me?" The girl was shocked when she saw that her boyfriend was blind too, and refused to marry him.
Her boyfriend walked away in tears, and later wrote a letter to her that simply said.
"Just take care of my eyes dear."

Life Is A Gift
Today before you think of saying an unkind word - Think of someone who can't speak.
Before you complain about the taste of your food - Think of someone who has nothing to eat.
Before you complain about your husband or wife - Think of someone who's crying out to God for a companion.
Today before you complain about life - Think of someone who went too early to heaven.
Before you complain about your children - Think of someone who desires children but they're barren.
Before you argue about your dirty house, someone didn't clean or sweep - Think of the people who are living in the streets.
Before whining about the distance you drive - Think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.
And when you are tired and complain about your job - Think of the unemployed, the disabled and those who wished they had your job.
But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another - Remember that not one of us are without sin and we all answer to one maker.
And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down - Put a smile on your face and thank God you're alive and still around.
Life is a gift, Live it, Enjoy it, Celebrate it!

One for Nana, since she wanted to see the poncho

This was taken at the Wapatki Ruins. My mom is sporting her luxurious Indian "horse blanket" poncho that she purchased for $30 at the swapmart. We all thought she was silly, but she was the warmest of everyone at the Grand Canyon... Beth and I had to find other ways to stay warm (pictures to come).

Back from the Big Ditch

So our trip was pretty amazing! We had some ups and downs (including a lost camera that later got found, a broken camera, too much $$ spent, problems at the airport, and coming home to 2 sick kitties that had to be put down this morning), but otherwise it was a great trip. For now we are mourning the loss of our two family members, Cali and Bailey (often referred to as Boulie). I will tell more on them later. For now, the trip...

Our first full day in Phoenix consisted of a group trip to the Desert Botanical Gardens and then a trip into the Superstition Mountains to visit Tortilla Flat for hamburgs and beers. Both were awesome!

My dad had to go to his conference, so day two was mom, Beth and I taking a trip to Taliesin West for my mother because she has been studying architecture in school and wanted to see this house. Not really mine and Beth's bag, but we went with her to make her happy. It was pretty interesting to learn about Frank Lloyd Wright, however, especially since I knew little about him. Then we drove into the mountains to see the Sears-Kay Ruins, which gave Beth and I an opportunity to take a small hike which we enjoyed.

Day three was wasted trying to go to a Swap Mart that was crappy, although I got two really cute hippy skirts out of it. We drove to my Godfather's house after and stayed the night. Day four was to the really good swapp Mart in Glendale where we spent tons of money on all kinds of stuff, including baskets, salsa, jewelry (tons of turquise), hippy skirts, fossils, and tons of fun.

Day five was a trip to Sedona to see the red rocks and the Chapel of the Holy Cross. We also ate and did some shopping in town. We stayed to get some amazing sunset pictures of the rocks. It is a pretty amazing place to see! We drove to Flagstaff to stay the night.

Day six was our grand adventure to the Grand Canyon. We drove to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and through the painted dessert to get there. We stopped and saw the Wapatki Ruins. SO AMAZING! And then we drove to the "Big Ditch." The funny part is that is was FREEZING--20 degrees or something. It was colder here than it was in Alaska! It was truly remarkable! For a big ditch, it takes your breathe away! We took so many pictures and could not believe how massive it is! I loved it and cannot wait to take David!

More to come later...

Q: What do you call 47 millionaires around a TV watching the Super Bowl?
A: The Kansas City Chiefs.

Q: What do the Kansas City Chiefs and Billy Graham have in common?

Q: How do you keep a Kansas City Chief out of your yard?
A: Put up goal posts.

Q: Where do you go in Kansas City in case of a tornado?
A: To Arrowhead - they never get a touchdown there.

Q: What do you call a Kansas City Chief with a Super Bowl ring?
A: A thief!!

Q: Why was Herm Edwards upset when the Kansas City Chiefs play book was stolen?
A: Because he hadn't finished coloring it.

Q: What's the difference between the Kansas City Chiefs and a dollar bill?
A: You can still get 4 quarters out of a dollar bill.

Q: How many Kansas City Chiefs does it take to win a Super Bowl?
A: Nobody knows and we will never find out.

Q: What do the Kansas City Chief and possums have in common?
A: Both play dead at home (and get killed on the road).

I'm Belle...

tutu (157k image)

Belle was inspired by other great movie heroines. Her peasant dress was loosely based on Judy Garland's (Dorothy) attire from The Wizard of Oz. The scene where Belle runs to the hills singing is a homage to Julie Andrews and the opening scene of 1965's The Sound of Music. Also, towards the end of the film Belle holds the dying Beast in her arms. This is similar to the way Maria holds the slain Tony in West Side Story.

Belle is one of the few Disney heroines who is not a princess, and one of the few who shows interest in books.

Belle is French for beautiful and yes Kelsie, you are beautiful!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day...

MLKJr_KC_TroostWall (190k image)
quote7 (19k image)

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was a famous leader of the American civil rights movement, a political activist, and a Baptist minister. In 1964, King became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (for his work as a peacemaker, promoting nonviolence and equal treatment for different races). On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1977, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Jimmy Carter. In 1986, Martin Luther King Day was established as a United States holiday, only the fourth Federal holiday to honor an individual (the other three being in honor of Jesus of Nazareth, George Washington, and Christopher Columbus).

The quote was back in the 60"s - pretty relevant today.
The mural is in Kansas City, Missouri commemorating King's activism.

What's up in Missouri...

* The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires public schools and districts, districts and state education systems to be 100 percent proficient in math and reading by 2014. To reach that goal, public schools across the country are required to reach hit a certain percentage, or benchmark, of student proficiency in both subjects. A school or district can meet or exceed the proficiency benchmark in both math and reading but still fail to make AYP. That’s because one or more of a possible 11 subgroups (such as low income students, disabled students or a low graduation rate) failed to reach hit the benchmarks. A subgroup must contain at least 30 students in most cases to be measured. Here are Park Hill's Elementary schools (not bad indeed). The Y & N mean yes or no to meeting the requirements and the bold are the 2 schools I work at. YES!

Park Hill
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Alfred L. Renner 45 55 48.1 51.9 Y
English Landing 71.3 28.7 76.9 23.1 Y

Union Chapel 66.8 33.2 63.4 36.6 Y

* Thursday Kansas City was 60, today 16 with sleet, ice and snow on it's way. The National Weather Service said that an Arctic air mass spreading south through Kansas and Missouri was responsible for Friday’s conditions. The outlook is much the same for the entire weekend, with subfreezing temperatures expected at least through Tuesday. Linda and I are staying in, warm, home cooked meals, movies and just relaxing.

* A miracle...
The boys — 15-year-old Shawn Hornbeck, abducted more than four years ago, and 13-year-old Ben Ownby, taken after getting off his school bus Monday afternoon where found Friday. Yes, this is a miracle!

Kelsie is a little under the weather- fighting a cold and she misses her mimmy. She spent last weekend with her Mim overnight. So Quiet out there - Please read

I know that everyone has been busy lately, but we need to add one item to our resolutions for this new year - POSTING! It is really important for everyone, especially those of us far away, to read about the different things that people are doing... even if it is the simple task of making dinner or a cake or whatever, or the fact that you helped someone or received a scripture that spoke to you in church... anything. I am trying to approach this new year in a different light. Part of it has to come from the fact that I'm not sure where I'm heading right now. I'm doing the job search thing, but to be honest I think I want to do something humble for a while... find a charity to work for, or work with animals in a humane society... I don't really know. I just know that I want to find value in my everyday being. I'm totally blabbing on and on here, but what I really wanted to get at was that this blog is important for us all... not just to share pictures and to tell what's going on, but to share life! Our lives! Throw the rules out the window and post something totally random. Put your heart into it! Some of this comes from reading mine and Lala's favorite blogger, Cathy Z. Please read the post on her friend and neighbor Mary. She had cancer and Cathy is so honest about telling her fears and regrets about not spending more time with her. I loved that she could open up and be so vulnerable to the world. And waht was so cool is that she encouraged Mary to start a blog to talk about her life and now that she is gone, her family has these little pieces of her life saved. Cathy took the blog entries and photos and made books for her families. I just think it is so cool and I want to be able to come here and know that when I read about my family, I feel the love and joy and honesty and giving... etc. We're amazing! All of us! Let's share it! And while we're at it, let's thank Lala for having this wonderful site to come to. Thank you! This is one of the best gifts of all!

The power of cheese...

cheese (152k image)
Thank you Kevin- one of my favorite gifts and yummy too!
kevinM (157k image)

Did you know...Cheese is to be treated as junk food under new advertising rules for children's television. The rules, which come into force this month, are part of a Government drive to reduce children's exposure to foods high in fat, salt and sugar. Much to the disgust of its makers, cheese is to be regarded in the same light as crisps, sugary cereals and cheeseburgers. The ban follows evidence that TV commercials have an indirect influence on what children eat and are contributing to obesity in the young.

Well I can tell you- I'm eating mine!

PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (GOOD TO KNOW)

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse. For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you. This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don't know it exists.

This is a MYTH. Check www.snopes.com.

I just wanted to add a big thank you to Erin Marie for doing most of the scrapbook for Nana & Poppy. Most don't know how much time and money go into these projects and she took it on. Then to go the extra mile- she wanted each family to have a book as well. That included buying the scrapbook, a punch and printing 53 pictures which cost about $50.00 a book. So don't forget to give a very big thank you to Erin for making the memory of New York last for each of us. I know I loved it and appreciate it more than I could ever say.
