Done...

No more late nights, narcissistic students, piles of papers and having no time...I'm all done being a professor. And just what will I do with all that extra time...

Ok, I don't like going from cold to hot to cold weather. It makes my dining room turn into a greenhouse.

Dee got a job...

deejob (153k image)

Darian found a job at an upscale restaurant in downtown Matthews, Gado Gado.
She did up a resume and we practiced some interviewing tips and by God she knocked it out of the park! Went in one day, interviewed the next and got called the same day!

Happy Earth Day...

earthday2 (23k image)

Ardent environmentalists hold some contempt at the idea of still having an annual, one-day celebration. As a friend who's an environmental researcher told me last week, Earth Day for environmental professionals is like Easter for Christians: it's a good excuse to have a party, but the real discipleship is supposed to happen all year. In other words, the eco roar that once captivated the world's attention somehow turned into an annual whimper of corporate sponsorships and moving yet empty speeches about the future of our children. "It's been reduced to planetary sound bites. It's not about a single day, it's about living green every day."

It's not so simple anymore. Being an environmentalist today calls for a whole new level of greener thinking — from what you choose at the grocery store to how you commute to work every day.
* The methane emissions from cows have 21 times the warming potential of carbon dioxide- Start by reducing the amount of animal products in your diet. Replace the meat and cheese with healthier beans, legumes, whole grains and extra servings of fruits and vegetables.
* Greening your household products: reducing risk of poisoning children; eliminating the bad fumes of conventional cleaning products; and getting rid of the harmful effects on the environment that bleach-cleaned toilets will wreak- Vinegar, baking soda and hot water are your friends. Baking soda cleans, deodorizes, softens water and scours (say goodbye to Comet!). Vinegar cuts grease and removes mildew, odors, some stains and wax buildup. Use corn starch to clean windows, polish furniture and shampoo carpets and rugs.
* Nothing on Earth breaks down traditional plastic - I'm reducing my carbon footprint in a very simple way these days: I carry a non-plastic reusable beverage container.
What are you doing to GO GREEN!

They are not that special...

me (86k image)

This book explains exactly what I have felt all semester long teaching..."when Twenge addressed students at Southern Connecticut State University a couple weeks back, their generation's narcissism was taken as a given by her audience. The fact that nearly 10 percent of 20-somethings have already experienced symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder, compared with just over 3 percent of the 65-and-over set? Not surprising. That 30 percent of college students agree with the statement: "If I show up to every class, I deserve at least a B"? Didn't get much of a rise either. When they're faced with the straight-out question—do you agree with this research, that you guys are the most narcissistic generation ever—there are uniform head nods and knowing grins to each other. But as Twenge goes on to illustrate, all that narcissism is a problem that can range from the discourteous—residential advisers at Southern lament students disregarding curfews, playing dance music until 3 a.m., demanding new room assignments at a moment's notice and failing to understand why professors won't let them make up an exam they were too hung over to take—to the disastrous—failed marriages, abusive working environments and billion-dollar Ponzi schemes. Seems that the flip side of all that confidence isn't prodigious success but antisocial behavior."
My classes, my practicum student- all demand A's with no effort, no work and worse no idea that it matters! This is why I don't want to teach any more- think I'll read this book!

Say a prayer or two...or three or four...

lsc (119k image)

Linda has been experiencing really bad headaches, facial numbness and tingling & pain down her left arm. On Friday the pain became more unbearable so she went to the ER- they admitted her to run some tests. We did an EKG (fine), 3 blood enzymes (fine), MRI (without contrast-fine, with contrast- problematic) so they ordered a CTA- this test found a 65% blockage in her caryatid artery so she is STILL in the hospital and has been started on a new medication and has a consult with a vascular doctor tomorrow morning. We were so hoping she would come home tonight- last nights over night was hell- I almost pulled her out (no monitoring, nurse took away her medication and didn't follow up so she was receiving NO tests- why was she there?) Finally at 1:00 AM we got some tests started and placed back on nitroglycerin. Then it took all day to get the MRI and CTA- our health care system IS REALLY BROKEN!
She isn't happy and I am not happy but neither can do a damn thing. Hopefully she can come home tomorrow- at least we can both get some good sleep in our own beds.
So please say LOTS of prayers because I really need her home- the house is too empty without her and my life would be too empty if she wasn't in it (it's almost been 20 years!)
Edited: WE ARE HOME! (7:30 p.m. Sunday) She has to schedule an appointment with a neurologist and then meet again with the vascular surgeon. She had an ultrasound today- the doctor is taking it slow and making sure the symptoms justify the invasive procedure (are these a TIA- Transient Ischemic Attach or mini stroke or something else?). The neurologist will make sure it is necessary. There is blockage but the question is- is it enough, is it causing these symptoms or can it be handled with medicine? She is on Zocor, aspirin and a heart healthy diet. We were just talking about "getting healthy" while we could- guess this is a good wake up call!

Don't judge a book by it's cover...

susanboyle2 (18k image)

Britain’s Got Talent’s third season debuted Saturday, and already the show has a breakout star: Susan Boyle ,an unemployed woman who’s “nearly 48,” talks about her cat, and says she’s “never been kissed.” You can guess how that’s going to turn out since she dreams of being a singer and compares herself to (actually talented) British musical theater star Elaine Paige.

Watch her audition in front of Simon Cowell and the other judges, including Piers Morgan; what she does to Simon Cowell is almost more remarkable than her singing.

Too often we dismiss things that aren't pretty or perfect when in reality- it could be the real prize.

Sunroom...

gable12 (51k image)

We would like to add an all season room to the house. We thought about taking out the front windows and having this room added to the very front- gable roof, all glass that opens. We think we would use the room a lot- don't know if we want to spend the money. We have had a couple bids- very different information. Input?

Stanley 3...

stanley3 (97k image)

First I got Devon's, then Alexandria's and now Danielle's. I am running out of ways to do this- I want each kids to be unique... this year we did a story in rhyme. Here are a couple of the ones I did.

Boy! What a super trip I’ve had-A trip like no other!
I’ve visited Missouri, Danielle and the cousin to your mother.
Karen quickly welcomed me, She said “Welcome to Parkville.
Having you come visit is really quite a thrill!”

The kids in group get anxious, So yoga we try to teach.
Breathe, relax and balance, A Happy place for each.
Stanley tried to do it, He tried to touch his shoe
But bending was something, Stanley just can’t do!
He did learn about breathing…It’s a Jimmy Buffett song.
Breathe in, Breathe out, And then you have to Move on…

Then I included the jimmy Buffett song to listen to...
He left for home today!

One Egg=One Day

eggs (102k image)
I have a picture of an egg
Painted by a friend
It's what I see to start each day
Hanging there at my bed's end

A day is like an egg, you know
Self-contained within its shell
Filled with energy and purpose
And yet remains so very frail

To free the many options here
A crack is all it takes
The shell turns loose potential
Like the dawn as each day breaks

The fate of either is our choice
The egg ...to hatch ...or boil ...or fry
The day ...to fill with worthwhile tasks
Or just enjoy as life goes by

All of our days, as all of our eggs
Are ours to use, but listen, folks
Beware of how you handle them
Some of them have double yolks!
