Choosing a Logo/Font info

I subscribe to a great design resource and wanted to share it here. Please do not share as you are supposed to pay for it. Go Here. Here's a small excerpt from the beginning:

"A good logo is a company’s signature; it’s a distinctive way of writing its name. Some logos include graphics, but most do not. A good logo is bold, clear and attractive, and it conveys an appropriate sense of the company. These qualities can be difficult to combine in one word."

I thought this would be important to share since we are choosing a typeface that needs to represent the FEELING of the restaurant... fancy/elegant, casual, trendy, old, industrial, urban, fun, artsy, jazzy, glamour, funky, etc. If you like some of the fonts used in there, I can try to find them or find something similar. This is rather important because it sets the tone for the restaurant before people even walk in.

I just thought this would be good to share.

A Few More Signs...

Nana wanted to see more bricks, so here they are. She also likes the lowercase "B" so I redid a couple of the ones with fonts that I think everyone likes. I also took out the cursive Clyde because a few people did not like it, and went to something more basic. Let me know what you think...

Good things come to those who practice...

hio (64k image)

It took 69 years but Poppy got a "hole in one" yesterday out at Wayne Hills. He got it on a par three, hole #11. I think he had to buy drinks in the bar for everyone and was late for a meeting, but he was one happy poppy. Kam also hit another one out of the park Tuesday. That makes 4 out of the park home runs and one in the park home run so far this year. The kid is GOOD. That's about it for now. Please congratulate the "old" one. Love mom

The Brickoven

"Mr. DiSanto owns another building, the old Stoetzel's bakery, and has restored the huge brick oven in the back room, hoping to turn the place into a restaurant. The upper two floors (which would make even Brooklyn brownstone dwellers envious) may someday become a bed and breakfast. Right now, Clyde lacks even a motel."

The above article was found from an interview dad did several years ago...he is now making his dream come true. I laugh because it's "fever" seems to be contagious.

I talk to mom and she talks about tile and chairs and trips she and dad make to the city to find everything they will need.
I talked to Kim and she talks about all the decorating she and mom are doing.
I talk with Erin and she is busy designing a logo.
I talk to Kay and she talks about T- charts and analyzing systems (it's from her Xerox black belt knowledge).

It is fun to watch everyone pull together their vast resources and talents to help Poppy or Pops (as Delaney would say) make his dream come true.

Coming soon...photos!
Edited: This is not to make light of the many hours the "men" have put in with the floors and the bar! If I recall even Kameron nailed on the floor.

My Farmhouse Apartment

2531143301_f508cd3707 (130k image)

I thought everyone would like to see my new apartment! My mom helped me decorate and both my parents helped me plant my gardens! I didn't get photos of the vegetable garden yet... but you get an idea. Mom took the photos... Thanks Mom and Dad for helping me! The spare room isn't pictured, nor the bathroom or my room. They are not done yet.

More signs - font changes

I'll be honest, I like the original font I used best because it is classic, yet fun feeling because it is fat, and very easy to read. The worst thing you can do is get a font that is tough to read driving by. I can't tell you the amount of times I have gone by something and said, "What the heck does that say?" But, as per Poppy's request I am going to try some other fonts and hope to hear what everyone thinks. Don't be afraid to chime in... in my world there is no bad feedback. Be honest... this is for something BIG!

ELEPHANT: My personal pick (shown before).
brickoven-5 (26k image)

PAPYRUS: This one looks like the feeling of brick, but may be difficult to duplicate on shirts.
brickoven-8 (23k image)

BRUSH SCRIPT: This one uses the same font as the "Clyde" and turned out rather nice.
brickoven-7 (23k image)

ALGERIAN: Not sure on this one.
brickoven-9 (26k image)

BICKHAM SCRIPT: A little bit fancier.
brickoven-10 (24k image)

IMPRINT: classic and simple.
brickoven-11 (24k image)

Sorry for so many posts, but this is the best way to get the feedback we need and to show everyone. I think it is agreed that everyone likes the brick archway... which colors? Red text on white or white text on red. I prefer the white on the red arch, but it could depend on the application and they may want to use it both ways depending on where it is placed. I think the red text on the white arch will look fantastic on menus backed in that red, but I like the white text on the red for everything else and looks more like brick.

Here's another designer tip for ya... colors can induce feelings and any variation of red induces hunger. Look at most restaurant logos and what do you see? Pizza Hut - Red, Duncan Donuts - Orange/Pink. This is why I love this business! There is so much more that goes into simple designs that you would think.

Sign - Similar, yet different

brickoven-2 (22k image)

brickoven-3 (23k image)

I took Nana's advide on using an archway like an oven (although it does not look like brick, but brick will be difficult to duplicate on embroidered shirts), and I added some wheat grass like she wanted. I will play around more with some other fonts and ideas later when I have more time. I also tried simulating bricks graphically along the bottom of one... it gives the idea in a simplistic way that can be reproduced on shirts, etc without too much detail. The color came out looking white, but I think it would look sharp in a cream color with the deep, rustic red.

* Well we finished planting all our pots with plants- the wagon that JoAnn gave us is filled with flowers and herbs (not shown here) but it looks much nicer.
* We put down mulch on the back garden
* When we lifted the hot tub- we found Herman under the lid- glad he is back, this is like the 4th year (I'm sure it is a decedent but still glad he is here)
* Not much of a Memorial Day- Linda worked and I prepared a new syllabus for my class at UMKC which starts tomorrow. This should be fun- work at Park Hill from 7:30-4:00 and then teach from 5:00- 9:00.
* Currently have 6 clients from the court and teach Saturday- long weeks...

Delaney story...

watchingyou (137k image)

Kay & Bob brought Delaney for some ice cream- she had to get into her seat so you went to her dad and asked him to hold her cone while she got into the car. She then turned to him and said, "Don't eat it, I'm watching you." and pointed to her eyes with her two fingers and then at Bob (like the movie, Meet the Parents). What a child!

House Hunt

Kris found us a cute little house in her neighborhood that we are hoping to buy. The lady originally wanted to do rent-to-own, but her terms are too risky. We went and saw it and talked to her about purchasing and she is not opposed, but wanted to try to get a renter first. We called her yesterday and she is hoping to have a decision Monday and will call everyone who was interested in buying. We already got prequalified, have done some research on what she paid and history on the street, and are talking with the bank so we can be ready. We hope we'll have good news soon. We're just not sure what steps to take because we aren't using a realtor. I think we need a purchasing attorney or something, but this has been an exciting step for us. We love the neighborhood and houses there don't stay available for long. Here are some pics of the house. It's a ranch with a small backyard, 2-car garage, 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, open floor plan, dining room, hardwood floors, fireplace, and a deck out back with a built-in gas hard-lined, stainless steel grill. It's perfect for a starter home for us... it's more than we planned on paying for a first home, but so little needs to be done to it for it to meet our needs and wants. We'll keep you posted.

Computer Problems Joke

I was having trouble with my computer. So I called Richard, the 11 year old next door whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over. Richard clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong? He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.' I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, 'An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.' Richard grinned.... 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?'
'No,' I replied. 'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.'

So I wrote down: I D 1 0 T ... I used to like the little sh*t.............

Drink responsibly...

alcohol (69k image)

With parties popping up (graduations, confirmations, summertime beach parties) here are some tips for safe alcohol consumption. Click LINK.
REMEMBER- NEVER DRINK & DRIVE.

For woman- think before you drink... alcohol has a direct toxic effect on your heart. Heavy drinking (14 drinks a week for woman, 21 for men) seemed to accelerate the effects of high blood pressure in men, and cause a direct toxic effect to heart tissue (enlarged heart) in women. Once a heart becomes enlarged — a sign it has been overtaxed — it is difficult to reverse. Studies have suggested that people with enlarged hearts are five to six times more likely to have heart attacks.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer globally. According to the World Health Organization, heart disease killed 17.5 million people in 2005, and that number is expected to rise to nearly 20 million by 2015.

Trees trimmed

branches (71k image)

I wish Nick was here to trim my trees. We have several large trees that needed major work. We hired the husband of a woman Linda works with, Kenny. While he trimmed trees, I babysat his daughter Kenya, she was quite entertaining (she's 5). At one point I rounded the corner and found her like this on the hot tub cover (no water in tub) but it did make me laugh that she could get so comfortable. She also informed me that I was going to be her Aunt.
Sunday we had a new roof put on the hot tub roof- it was worn and buckling - our roofer (I think he is?) was not done at the time of this post so I can not show you the finished product.
We got our garden in (except the onions) and moved around benches- the one in back under the shade tree had Poison Ivy next to it so I figured we were NOT going to sit back there- we moved it in front of the barn, there are two matching pots on each side- will take a picture when we get them planted.
Still to go... 6 beds of mulch, stain hot tub and deck (hard, lots of rain) and paint lawn furniture- then I think we can move to the summer projects (garage, barn, bathroom). Till next weekend...

kansascity (58k image)

Two small tornadoes from an overnight line of thunderstorms left hundreds of Kansas City-area homes and businesses damaged, destroying some.

The National Weather Service said a high-end EF2 tornado -- wind speeds between 111-135 mph -- hit around 2 a.m. Friday, cutting a 75-foot-wide swath along a roughly two-mile stretch of north Kansas City near Liberty.

Investigators determined a second tornado hit a little further south in Gladstone around the same time, though they've yet to classify the size of the twister. Teams also were on the ground in Independence to determine if damage there was caused by a third tornado spawned on the leading edge of what the weather service has characterized as a bow echo.

So when you look at the map you can see us in Parkville (a little more north of the city) in comparison to Gladstone and Liberty. Can't say I like Kansas City weather- give me snow any day.

Beltane~greenman~Taliszas (81k image)

The old Celtic name for May Day is Beltane, meaning 'bright fire' or 'lucky fire' and it is held on May 1st. It celebrates the start of summer, the crop and pasturing season. Beltane honors the ancient continental Celtic sun and healer God, Belenus.
Beltane festivities would begin days before May 1st. The villiagers would travel into the woods to gather nine sacred woods needed to build the Beltane bonfires. Each wood had a magical property. Birch was for the Goddess; Oak was for the God. Hazel was for knowledge and wisdom. Rowan was for life, and Hawthrone for Purity and fairy magic. The Willow was for death. Fir was for Birth and rebirth. Apple was for love and family and the Vine was for joy and happiness.Celebrations include weaving a web of life around the Maypole and leaping the Beltane fire for luck.
