We are family!

familyB (145k image)
"Living life is fun and we've just begun to get our share of the world's delights.
High hopes we have for the future and our goal's in sight
No we don't get depressed, Here's what we call our golden rule...
Have faith in you and the things you do you won't go wrong
This is our family Jewel.
We are family, Get up everybody and sing!"

Swing higher...

swing (148k image)

Every year I live I am more convinced that the waste of life lies in the love we have not given, the powers we have not used, and the selfish prudence that will risk nothing. No one ever yet was the poorer in the long run for having once in a lifetime 'let out all the length of all the reins'.

Flashback...

differentroad (171k image)
“One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
Which road do I take? she asked.
Where do you want to go? was his response.
I don't know, Alice answered.
Then, said the cat, it doesn't matter.”

George Carlin...RIP

"I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn
and cross it deliberately.

George Carlin, the acerbic, Grammy-winning comedian whose career spanned more than 50 years, died of heart failure Sunday. Carlin constantly breached the accepted boundaries of comedy and language, particularly with his routine on the "Seven Words" — all of which are taboo on broadcast TV to this day. Carlin was a master of the observational, "Didja ever notice..." humor that is every comic's stock-in-trade now, but in his case, it wasn't just random musings; his accounting of our absurd, illogical behavioral tics all added up to a larger point about human folly, hypocrisy, and superstition. I loved his routine called "Stuff",take a peek!.

School humor...

A guy goes to the supermarket and notices an attractive woman waving at him.
She says hello. He's rather taken aback because he can't place where he knows her from. So he says, 'Do you know me?'

To which she replies, 'I think you're the father of one of my kids.'

Now his mind travels back to the only time he has ever been unfaithful to his wife and says, 'My God, are you the stripper from my bachelor party that I made love to on the pool table with all my buddies watching while your partner whipped my butt with wet celery?'

She looks into his eyes and says calmly, 'No, I'm your son's teacher.'

They took our offer on the house!

2570988153_ca1a11afc3 (161k image)

It looks like things are moving right along! We got the call yesterday that they accepted our offer! They actually rejected our first offer, where we tried to get 6% consessons, but they accepted 3%. We are so excited! It's going to be a lot of work because this is a foreclosure and needs TLC, but we see the potential and think it is a great investment. The people who had the house before paid $205K (we're getting it for almost the same as the little one we liked right up the street and at twice the size - 2500 sq. ft.) and we're sure that it's worth much more than that now if we put even the bare minimum into it. This is the same development that Aunt Kris lives in and it is a GREAT neighborhood! The prices are only rising there, especially with a $500K+ development that just went up behind it.
Our major concerns are the HVAC and the roof, but we are having a home inspection done just to make sure. If anything else is wrong we will walk away. Go here to see pictures (it's not so pretty now, but it will be): Hickory Knoll.

And here is a house on the same street with exactly the same layout, so you can see the potential: Comparison House.

We need a lot of paint, and we probably need to rip out the carpets, although a couple may be salvageable with professional cleaning. We are also planning to replace the HVAC and do a whole lot of popcorn ceiling scraping. Down the road we will probably replace the laminate flooring, but for now the other stuff comes first. We're ready to get DIRTY! We're so excited! We meet with our mortgage guy on Saturday to nail that, and then it's the home inspection and closing! We should close by the end of July! We're in the final stretch to having a home!

Celebrating Father's Day...

mydad (113k image)
"The beautiful in life...
Some talk of it in poetry,
Some grow it from the soil,
Some build it in a steeple,
Some show it through their toil.
Some breathe it into music,
Some mold it into art,
Some shape it into bread loaves...
Some hold it in their hearts."

And Delaney shows it in her smile and how she celebrates all of it every minute.

To all the Fathers in the family...

Fathers08 (107k image)
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so,
He called it ... Dad

Edited: Sorry I have no pictures of Tim and Mike but I'm sure their kiddos have given them a great Father's Day!

Sad day...

russert (8k image)

"Tim Russert was a gentleman and giant, not just in politics and journalism, but in life. And through that life, he gave us all a model worth emulating. With a reasoned voice, a sharp mind and a fair hand, Tim took the measure of every Washington official and all those that sought to be one. He was a great journalist and an even better friend. His passing is a tragic loss for us all, but especially for the family he loved so much."

It begins...

garageB (154k image)

This is just the one side that I started on. As you can see... lots of stuff and the steps have never been stained. I cleaned up the mess to include getting rid of old paint, stained the steps (lots of cracks and underneath parts) and they now look like this. Then I noticed that the door has never been painted so it now looks like this and needs another coat to give it a smooth finish. Well you know what happens next- the outside of the door has faded so I pained it too. Notice the bottom of the door- yuck! Well it continues because there are two other outside doors that turned from green to bluish faded green so they will get a new paint job tomorrow. All the junk that was in the garage is on the back of Linda's pickup so we will go through that tomorrow as well. Hopefully Sunday we can start painting the walls, I started several years ago, ran out of paint, got new paint but never finished...this is the year to finish. Then we will get rid of the clothes we never wear in the closet we put in and finally add a new shelf (coming out of laundry room) to store small appliances (waffle maker, extra pans, popcorn machine, ice cream machine) so those items are neat and orderly. We will have more room in the back as well. Home ownership- isn't it fun!

Randy Pausch a must see...

SMALLRandyWithBestSellerPlaque (32k image)
"We can not change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."

Carnegie Mellon Professor Randy Pausch, who is dying from pancreatic cancer, gave his last lecture at the university Sept. 18, 2007, before a packed McConomy Auditorium. In his moving talk, "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams," Pausch talked about his lessons learned and gave advice to students on how to achieve their own career and personal goals. He was given 6 months to live- it's now been 9... the cancer is spreading and he is having more difficulty but still has his positive outlook on life. You can keep up with his progress at Randy Pausch's update page.
His lecture was turned into a book... "The Last Lecture" which I am starting to read (finished my other book last night). I am also using this in my death and dying class. His lecture is wonderful to see so I have included it here:

What's up...

kelsiescrap (138k image)

* Kelsie and Kameron ran into each other on bikes, fell down and she is scrapped up...she loves to tell everyone her brother did it!
* Erin and David found a house in Kris's neighborhood they hope they can buy...good luck and keep us posted.
* Beth's new boyfriend Chris, cute!
* Looking for a good cookbook on sustainability and simple recipes, try Alice Waters, the book is great!
* The one thing I love most about summer- I have some time to read and am currently reading Joan Anderson and "The Second Journey". She wrote a trilogy before and this is a followup after 10 years. Easy read.
* I am also listening to a book called Animal, Vegetable, Miracle which is about a journalistic investigation that tells the story of how one family was changed by one year of deliberately eating food produced in the place where they live. This is very interesting and not why we belong to our local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) but makes me feel better that I eat local food. Healthier, better for the local economy, saves on fuel consumption and makes more sense.
* Our CSA is provided through Hen House and we have been able to try many different vegetables, tofu, products and some of the best tasting meats, eggs and milk. It is because it is all fresh and I love it.
* Yesterday I cleaned my house- top to bottom, scrub, dust clean...feels good. Haven't made it to the garage yet but I will!
* Renewed my Fliker Pro account so we have space for pictures (hint, hint).
* What's up with you?

Hope...

hope (182k image)
"i am no better
no more special
no more talented
no more lucky
than anyone else.

i struggle
i cry
i get pissed off.

i worry
i obsess
i get scared
and i get down.

i have a healthy supply of emotional baggage
and a bathroom scale i give the finger to on a daily basis.

i have made 100,000 poor choices to which i
have 100,000 excuses for,
and i have a masters degree in the art of getting into trouble.

and just because i sometimes dress the part of an artsy cool chick
is no indication that i actually am.
in fact,
i am clumsy,
dorky,
and really the furthest thing from cool.

but i know what makes me feel alive
and what makes my spirit feel free.

i do want to change the yucks inside of me
and i deeply want to assist in healing and loving in
whatever tiny or gigantic way i can.

i have fallen down more times than i have leaped gracefully
and i dance in between heaven and hell so frequently
that im sure i have left both the angels and the demons a tad confused.

but when i love, its really big
and when i laugh, its really loud
and i know how to have fun even in the midst of the worst storm.

but really,
im no different than the rest of us walking on this planet,
just trying to do the best they can, with what they've got.

i really do try.
and i know you really try too."

The junk collector...

junkcoll (108k image)

Yes, they are nice to have but they also collect junk...lots of junk. Yesterday, Linda and I worked all day in the barn, we finished the day with 1 full pick up truck of throw away, 1/2 truck of paper we took to the recycle bin and are ready to bring JoAnn a truck load of her stuff. We can now walk in the barn. We still have to go through all the bins on the shelves and reduce but this feels good too. I also have two bags in my house that we are shredding...yuck, slow and tedious.

We got the hot tub back up- Linda needs it for her back. Weekends go fast.

Today I must grade 18 quizzes, write a new quiz and a midterm and prep two lessons. I have a 3:30 therapy appointment with a family and still have 1 1/2 bags of shredding to do.

Too wet to work outside because it poured here yesterday (at least we are still here, did not blow away and our house is not flooded- Parkville is, river crested last night). I need to mow the lawn again (mowed it Friday) and I'm sure there are lots of weeds. Gardens need to be hoed and tomatoes need to be tied up but right now you sink in the mud so hopefully it will dry soon.

Friday is garage day- all the stuff in the garage will move to...the barn...we will paint the walls, stain the steps and ORGANIZE. All the junk will go. We are getting rid of paints and caustic cleaners this year. We have switched to earth friendly. Smells better and better for you.

Wish many of you were here- great finds I'd love to give away...books, games, toys, stuff many of you might like that is in great shape but no longer needed at 7320 NW Shelter Rd. Too expensive to ship and too expensive to drive so it goes to Goodwill and comes off the taxes.

Well- I have procrastinated long enough...off to work!

Dessert Idea for Restaurant

Desserts (18k image) 4974Ci4 (15k image)

Last night David and I took one of his collegues to dinner and we decided to indulge in a little dessert. They had full size options or something that looked like these (pictured above). Ours were in little square shapped shot glasses and they were only $1.50 each or $7.50 for all 5 kinds. I, of course being a Gemini and not being able to make my mind up, had to try three of them. BUT, when it's only a few bites, it's easy to do and doesn't give you a sugar overload and won't kill your diet (well, unless you do several like I did). I immediately thought of the restaurant. I did a search online and these are becomming more popular. The restuarant last night offered a chocolate ecstacy (chocolate cake layered with choclate pudding, topped with fudge - I'm thinking Montezuma Mud Pie on this one), a peanut butter pie (peanut butter mouse, chocolate pudding, and a oreo cookie layered on the bottom, and a strawberry cheesecake (grahm cracker bottom and layers of cheesecake and strawberry). They were delicious! And with all the pudding options, I immediately thought of our pudding cake! It would be perfect in these! They also had a carrot cake layered one and another berry one. I just thought it was a great idea and had to share. They were called Mini Tasters. There's always room for dessert with these!
