It's that time when we change things up on the blog page! The main reason is I have been getting lots of spam- people posting under comments all kinds of stuff that shouldn't be there. With the new program- I control who posts and rid our site of unwanted garbage. Second- we need something new to invigorate us into using this more- nice clean style but it has features that many will find more user friendly- you can post directly from flicker pictures on the blog, you can post from your phone (for those who know how to do that stuff!). I think this will help many people post easier.
First thing- figure out how to load it and convert our data- guess who is doing most of that- YES...Erin Marie. When we get it figured out- we will have several posts to help you post things up- not sure if passwords will work but I'll work it out even if I have to call each and everyone of you!

Finally Got our Foyer Painted and HVAC Installed TODAY!!!

david-foyer (85k image)

What a difference it makes. No more crayon scribbles and nasty walls! We finally got our taxes and paid to have someone paint our foyer for us... God it feels good. Now we just have to get those stairs fixed so we don't have the ugly stained carpet.

And to top it all off, our HVAC was installed TODAY! It’s a hybrid system (heat pump and gas) that we accidentally saved an additional $3000 on because the guy screwed up the quote… we’re paying $7600 for the furnace and AC because they were having a sale where you got the furnace half off and money off the AC unit. We were supposed to save $3,000 and we’re ending up saving $6,000 due to the mix up. Not too bad (I’ll take a $13,000 system at the $7600 price tag). AND it’s super efficient and we’ll qualify for the home efficiency credit next year on our taxes. I can’t wait to sleep tonight in comfort.

We also finished painting all the shutters (22 in all) and the front door Fourth of July weekend, so I plan to get a picture up soon.

Slowly but surely, it's coming along. The last big ticket item to replace now (besides the bathrooms inside and the flooring) is the roof, which we'll probably do next year.

Kam does it again...

kamnose (101k image)

Kam went for a pop fly ball and the other kids head hit his nose and...you guessed it- broken nose. Nana told me he will have surgery Monday- send him a card and keep him in your prayers.

Thanks

thanksnick (131k image)

This weekend Kevin was home and Kristie and her family came down for golf and dinner. It went very well. Everyone had a good time. WE liked her family a lot! I think her mom and I could be good friends. But I wanted to say "THANK YOU" to my family for all the help at the dinner. Everyone of them came out and asked "what can I do?" I could not have done this without your help. You helped set up the tables, put out the horsdouvres, poured drinks and saw that people were watered down, help serve the food, and most of all, helped clean up. A special thanks to Nick, he was such a help in the kitchen. If we ever do something like this again I'm calling you. It was fun. I love all of you and thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am a lucky woman to call you my family.

A side note--Farah had her baby on Tuesday. A little girl named "Lily Grace" 5 lbs 14 oz. Everyone is fine and Grandma and Grandpa are just glad shes here and doing good. This was a hard pregnancy.

Love, Mom

Shnozfest fundraiser in memory of Jonathan Ozimek

PB_Shnoz_brochure (51k image)I got this from my friend Vanessa and I wanted to share it in case anyone was interested (especially those near Rochester). It is a golf tournament with dinner included ($99 solo player; $396 foursome) or just the dinner ($40). Anyway, here's her e-mail:

I hope everyone is doing well. I am writing to invite you to learn about the 4th annual Shnozfest- a fundraiser in memory of my brother, Jonathan. This year Shnozfest will be raising funds for the Penfield High School Scholarship Association by means of a golf tournament and/or dinner with many raffles thanks to local donations. Shnozfest takes place on August 8 in Penfield, at Shadow Pines Golf Course. Dinner will include a steak and chicken buffet, music and prizes. Please consider supporting this important event, as it provides a monetary award to a graduating senior who is entering the field of medicine. Jonathan was on his way to becoming a doctor, and although he cannot help others, we can fulfill his dream by helping in this small way.

Thank you!
Vanessa, the Ozimek family and friends

Triglycerides...

heart-disease-300x240 (49k image)

Triglycerides are a type of fat found in your blood. They are a major source of energy and the most common type of fat in your body.

When you eat, your body uses the calories it needs for quick energy. Any extra calories are turned into triglycerides and stored in fat cells to be used later. The excess calories are stored as fat regardless of what kind of food you eat-fat, carbohydrate, or protein. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, you may have high triglycerides.

In normal amounts, triglycerides are important to good health. When triglyceride levels are high, it is not clear whether these high levels directly increase your risk for heart disease. But high triglycerides are often part of a group of conditions called metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is the combination of high blood pressure, high blood sugar, too much fat around the waist, low HDL ("good") cholesterol, and high triglycerides. This syndrome does increase your risk for heart disease as well as for diabetes and stroke.

Triglycerides are measured as part of a blood test that measures your cholesterol. Normal triglyceride levels are below 150. High levels are 200 or above.

What causes high triglycerides?

Conditions that may cause high triglycerides include:

* Obesity.
* Poorly controlled diabetes.
* An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
* Kidney disease.
* Regularly eating more calories than you burn.
* Drinking a lot of alcohol.

Certain medicines may also raise triglycerides. These medicines include:

* Tamoxifen.
* Steroids.
* Beta-blockers.
* Diuretics.
* Estrogen.
* Birth control pills.

Certain types of high cholesterol and high triglycerides are caused by genetics.
How can you lower your high triglycerides?

If you are overweight, losing weight may be the best way to lower triglycerides. You may be able to lower your triglycerides by eating fewer calories and increasing your activity. Other diet changes that might help include limiting fats and sugars, and limiting or not drinking alcohol.

If increasing your activity and watching calories do not work, you may also need medicine. Medicines called statins are commonly used to lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol. But drugs called nicotinic acid (or niacin) and fibrates seem to work better for lowering triglycerides. If you have high triglycerides, high LDL cholesterol, and low HDL ("good") cholesterol, you may take more than one type of medicine that lowers cholesterol.

Remembering and Honoring Those Touched By Cancer...

120775 (48k image)

Relay For Life® offers the opportunity to remember people who have lost their lives to cancer and honor those who have won their battle. One of the most moving parts of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony.

As the sun sets over campsites and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called Luminaria, each of which has a special meaning. Some celebrate those who have battled cancer and have lived to tell their stories. Many remember the lives of those who have been lost to this terrible disease. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor.

Our family has remembered many...post yours here...
