Sweet Dominican Treats

street-vendor (95k image)

While we were in the Dominican Republic, we had many of these little treats called Dulces de Coco and Mani Molado. Street vendors walk around everywhere selling them. This one, in particular, was near David's dad's house and carried the bowl on his head street-vendor-2. I had not even tried these treats until this precise moment. After I did, I told David we should have bought the whole bowl! They were delicious!

street-vendor-3 (75k image)

David's favorite are the Dulces de Coco, which are little coconut bars. I liked the Mani Molado, which are little ground peanut bars. They are both delicious and I searched for their recipes online. These were the best I could find... DULCES DE COCO and TURRON DE MANI (I think this is the same thing - it is pretty close).

Holy crap! And I do mean lots of crap...

lr (109k image)

Here is the house currently (trust me, this is better than it was - hard to believe, I know). We are filled with all kinds of crap and trying to eliminate and simplify. And the bad thing is, you are not seeing the 10x10' stortage unit filled with more crap. We have a lot to go through. Already we have 3 boxes for Goodwill, and this is after 2 car loads that went from the last 2 moves and a garage sale where we got rid of a lot of furniture. Yes, lots o crap.

loft (88k image)

And here is the loft. Most of those boxes are scrapbooking and office stuff... you might say I have a slight addiction, but it brings me joy. This may be my point of focus today, although if I do I may retreat in there and never return to civilzation.

But some good news, we have uncovered the kitchen! I have one more box to empty and then we are done. We have figured out that we don't need to buy groceries for the next century too, so we are trying to use some food up. It's going well, but there are still boxes everywhere. Most stuff is going into storage.

I have to go finish my 2-box-a-day quota, so I gotta go. We'll take more pictures as it gets better.

A bunch of interesting creatures...

caterpillar (125k image)
“I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now;
let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

I went outside to cut some fresh basil and parsley. Here is my parsley plant-gone and the reason why. They say Monarch Butterflies eat parsley-I hope it is a pretty one.
Then as I went to cut the basil I thought there was a rock in the dirt-WRONG- it is Mr. Toad. He always came out when there was water. I wondered where he lived, now I know.

Peace symbols...

peacepole (58k image)
"Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions,
slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures."

This turned out nice...I took a metal pole, painted it purple and then hung pictures of peace symbols on it. I have the dove, hand sign, peace sign and chinese symbol. Helps the kids to understand it is a "world" concept.

cranes (84k image)

Another symbol are paper cranes. The paper crane has become an international symbol of peace in recent years as a result of it's connection to the story of a young Japanese girl named Sadako Sasaki born in 1943. Sadako was two years old when the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. As she grew up, Sadako was a strong, courageous and athletic girl. In 1955, at age 11, while practicing for a big race, she became dizzy and fell to the ground. Sadako was diagnosed with Leukemia, "the atom bomb" disease. Sadako's best friend told her of an old Japanese legend which said that anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes would be granted a wish. Sadako hoped that the gods would grant her a wish to get well so that she could run again. She started to work on the paper cranes and completed over 1000 before dying on October 25, 1955 at the age of twelve. In 1958, a statue of Sadako holding a golden crane was unveiled in Hiroshima Peace Park. The children also made a wish which is inscribed at the bottom of the statue and reads:
"This is our cry, This is our prayer, Peace in the world".

If you liked the first one...

the story goes... the band, "ok go!" says "we're gonna make a music video", so they enlist the sister of one of the band members, who is a choreographer, and they come up with a routine. they take it to their record label and they say, "that's really very nice, but there's no way in hell we're going to make that video." so they shoot it in the backyard of one of the guys homes and voila! smash hit on the internet. good stuff!

Back from D.R.

ed-sleeping (73k image)

4 a.m. - that's what time we actually got home this morning. You see, we flew out of NYC and then had to drive, so we went from the Dominican Republic, to Fort Lauderdale, FL, and then to NYC, only to jump in the car and drive back to Virginia. Yes, we traveled across many countries and states just to get home to a comfy bed. Our trip was great and we have so much to share (good and bad), but we have to unbury the house first so it may wait a little while. For now, we are happy to be home. For those who have never seen some of these types of countries (and I'm not talking about the resort areas), there is a lot to be learned:

1. A toilet seat is a wonderful luxury and I still don't know how they balance.
2. Hot water is non-existant for showering. And that water is COLD!
3. The electricity goes out at least twice a day.
4. It's hotter than shit there.
5. Bugs are just a part of it (I'll tell about the 1.5" cockroach that ran down my leg later).
6. AC... what's that?
7. Moli Molado (Ground Peanut Candy Sweets) and Dulce de Coco (Coconut Candy Sweets) are amazing little treats.
8. Family is the most important thing.
9. Clubs in caves are so cool - pictures to come!!!
10. Don't drive there... EVER! Very scary. As David put it... you get to drive the way you always wanted to (i.e. no laws on the road what-so-ever - worse than Puerto Rico).

These are just our top ten and we'll have to elaborate on later. You need to learn to appreciate what you do have because many people in the world are not so lucky. These few things were ideas that I never even questioned or even thought of as luxeries before, and now my eyes are wide open. We all need to remember this the next time we are upset that we do not have the money for something. We all have a lot more than you even realize. Please appreciate it. I saw first-hand and the culture shock put me into a tail-spin. But regardless, it is a beautiful place and we can't wait to go back.

Katie's Soccer...

knockdown (121k image)

So i had my first scrimmage today...it was an instructional scrimage against desales high school. My coaches daughter plays on that team so it was kind of weird cause she would cheer her on too. I was defending her and i accidently ( accidently being the key word ) knocked her over so needless to say i don't think my coach likes me very much anymore. But anwyays we won like 7-3 and we played really good....i played right half-back when i was in and i think i did a pretty good job for it being so early in the season. I have a game at mynderse on tues the 29th of august at 8:45 so wish me luck!! I also have a tournement at midlakes the first and the second so hopefully our team will be ready to kick some butt!! Hope to talk to or see you all soon!!

Lots of love,

We had a cam light in the den (ugly), we replaced it with this light. We also started scrapping the cottage cheese off the bathroom to see how it went. Came off pretty good but clean up was hard. We went and got lots of drop clothes and will work some more. Kris- we can use your expertise- we have a "BIG" house.

Reunions...

reunions (116k image)
“Never go to your high school reunion pregnant
or they will think that is all you have done since you graduated.”

This weekend in Clyde, there were many class reunions- Dad's 50th (1956), Karen's 30th (1976) and Kay's 20th (1986). Dad had a great time (he was the organizer) and they had a picnic at the farm. Mom said it was a lot of fun. Karen skipped hers (back to work and odd to go to a class reunion with people you really didn't go to school with- the downside of graduating a year early) and Kay went to hers and was happy she did. She enjoyed seeing a lot of her friends. Delaney got to spend the night with Kam & Kelsie and she had a great time too!

Summer projects...

fountain (196k image)
“The more we do, the more we can do;
the more busy we are, the more leisure we have.”

Well it was a busy and productive summer. We redid the area in the front of the house- adding grasses and a fountain- we like the simple look and serene feel.
Tree Garden This might not look like much but there was nothing under this tree before. It now is circled with Liriope and the inside plant is goose neck (looks bad now because it is so dry). Hopefully next year it will be fuller. Linda had to plant hundreds of plants to fill this in.
Willow plants. We planted these plants on the South side of the barn to cover the barn and soften it. They will grow much larger and in early spring are a varigated color.
Upstairs- I cleaned (alot of junk laying around) the upstairs, laundry room, garage and barn. It took several weeks to clean them all.
Painted living room- added a suede finish to the livingroom.
Clean carpets- we dry cleaned the carpets through out the house. Notice a lot of work inside because most of the summer was 100 plus!
Bernards tables- pretty ugly so we cleaned it. Here it is redone- not sure if I'll refinish it or not.
Deckwall- when we could work outside we did the brick wall around the deck and added hostas.
Rockwall- we built this wall and will plant 3 grasses in it this week (will get dirt and got plants Sunday). We took out a plant that was dying, will move the tree which is falling over, will even out the rock and added the roses and wall around them.
House paint- we had to repaint the house trim- it chips and discolors so we got that done.
Bearpaw- yesterday we put down the bear paw to frame this garden. We ran out and have to finish the back but most of it got done.
The last thing we have to get done this year is the skylights because they were damaged in the hail storm along with the roof. We are going to get flat e glass skylights which keeps out 99.9 of UV rays and should help with the heat in the house.
This was a good summer- lots of projects done, taught at UMKC and did a lot of scrapbooking and have almost all my Christmas gifts done. I feel good going back to work!

"Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly."

Well congratulations to Sarah Anne the newest driver in the world! Oh boy another new set of worries...but she is wise and will do fine it's the other people you have to look out for sometimes including those animals!

They have had a busy week starting Monday with Allergy skin test in which poor Sarah fainted twice and they stopped her test. She had bloodwork done yesterday so not as accurate but easier on her. Kate we found out has several allergies from grasses, to dust, cats and we will get the rest of the results on the 29th. Kate then left after the test to go to Atlantic City for the week with Grandma Bailey so she has been a traveling thing for two weeks now.

They both start 4 hour soccer practices next week and looking forward to that. Katie for JV and Sarah for Varsity. Can't believe they are both in High School......

Nick.....well haven't heard much from him. Just trying to find a job himself and working three part time jobs. His mother well getting more than frustrated with the job search myself.....just keep praying!
