The Dragonfly...

dragonfly (142k image)
"In North American Indian lore, the dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change,
representing the messages of wisdom and enlightenment;
and communication from the elemental world. The dragonfly possesses the ability to see through illusion. They bring prosperity and harmony. The dragonfly totem teaches skillful action while maintaining a free and joyful sense of being. The dragonfly brings the light and color of transformation into your life."

Caught this little guy while trying to catch the hummingbirds...love my new camera and can't wait to use it this next weekend!

No two moons...

MoonMarsDiff_300 (10k image)

THE REAL STORY. Even when Mars is at opposition, which it won't be until December 2007, it looks like an orangish star, nowhere near as big and bright as the full Moon.

Mars did make an extraordinarily close approach to Earth several years ago, culminating on 27 August 2003, when the red planet came within 35 million miles (or 56 million kilometers) of Earth, its nearest approach to us in almost 60,000 years. At that time, Mars appeared approximately 6 times larger and 85 times brighter in the sky than it ordinarily does. (The message quoted above was often reproduced with an unfortunate line break in the middle of the third sentence of the second paragraph, leaving some readers with the mistaken impression that Mars would "look as large as the full moon to the naked eye" and not realizing that the statement only applied to those viewing Mars through a telescope with 75-power magnification.)

Although Mars' proximity to Earth in August 2003 (referred to as a perihelic opposition) was a rare occurrence, the red planet comes almost as near to us every 15 to 17 years. To the unaided observer, Mars' appearance in August 2003 wasn't significantly larger or brighter than it is during those much more common intervals of closeness.

Bully hummingbird...

shutterstock_15713 (86k image)

We put up 3 feeders in the front of the house to watch the hummingbirds. One bird will not let any other birds near the feeders. After reading tonight I learned this is "survival" behavior and can not be changed. I moved 2 of the feeders to other areas (3 were in a row and in his line of sight), now they are spread out and hopefully others can enjoy as well. I named him George W!

Happy Birthday Kelly...

Kellybday (140k image)
Happy Birthday, sister, have a blessed day
May your heart be filled with wonders as you travel on life's way.
I pray your day is filled with love and joy of every kind
May the world rise to greet you, I hope these things you find
Joy, peace and happiness, contentment of the heart
May you find all these, and may it only be the start
of a fantastic year!"

Let's all wish Kelly a very happy birthday.

Right around the corner...

snowchair (69k image)

Christmas is right around the corner. Remember, this year we are exchanging PICTURES of our lovely family. I can't wait. If you would like to have some pictures taken...just see Kim, Linda or Lala during our Labor Day picnic and we will be happy to snap a few (million).

Labor Day, the unofficial end of summer, is the fifth-busiest U.S. travel weekend of the year.AAA predicts 35.2 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home this holiday.Despite record-level delays, nearly 16 million passengers will fly on U.S. airlines over the Labor Day weekend. Just pray we make it without too many delays, short weekend but I'm looking forward to some little people kisses and hugs!

Firefly...

bugs (69k image)
Take my love. Take my land.
Take me where I cannot stand.
I don't care, I'm still free.
You can't take the sky from me.
Take me out to the black.
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back.
Burn the land And boil the sea.
You can't take the sky from me
Have no place I can be
Since I found Serenity
But you can't take the sky from me.

Delaney and her mommy went out collecting fireflies....can't get more fun than that!

I think she's got it...

"You don't take a photograph. You ask, quietly, to borrow it."

When Kim came to Kansas City- we practiced with our cameras- the last 2 headers were taken by Farley- I think she is picking this up rather well- thanks for the wonderful shots we could use on the page.
This picture was taken by Erin- we need to share our photos more (hint, hint).
Another hint- get ready everybody- Lala & Linda have their cameras ready to go!

Strong chicks...

ornary (145k image)
"Only the strong will survive."

Good news for Erin- she has a job offer (out of 70 people)"Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will." Way to go!
Kelsie- was talking to Nana on the phone, Nana asked to talk to her mommy, Kelsie said "I think we should hang up now!", Nana told her she wanted to take to her mom and then, she hung up...strong willed!
I think the women in this family are really cool (men aren't too bad either)!

Happy Birthday Poppy...

ked (75k image)
"Instead of counting candles,
Or tallying the years,
Contemplate your blessings,
As your birthday nears.

Consider special people
Who love you, and who care,
And others who’ve enriched your life
Just by being there.

Think about the memories
Passing years can never mar,
Experiences great and small
That have made you who you are.

Another year is a happy gift,
So cut your cake, and say,
"Instead of counting birthdays,
I count blessings every day!"

Let's all wish Poppy a very Happy Birthday!

Miscommunication ...

A co-worker got a pen stuck inside our printer. He started to try and remove the pen, but I told him we don't have time for that now, just put a note on the printer telling folks not to use it and then report it to the Help Desk. So he grabbed a piece of paper and scribbled on it. I left before he finished the note. About 20 minutes later, one of my techs comes in laughing and says he was just in the lobby, saw a piece of paper on a printer and went to investigate.

Attached is what he found. Sometimes things don't always come out the way you want them to...

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT THE PAST IN BLACK & WHITE ...

pic11635 (44k image)

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in icepack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli

Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

We all took gym, not PE and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.

Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat. (I bet I could have made out great when I fell face first in a gravel pit- don't forget pain and suffering).

We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got butt spanked again when we got home.

I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?

We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn’t taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

It can happen to anyone...

wdfMyBook_Essential_1U (8k image)

13 years of school documents, all my UMKC and more-GONE! I hardly used the drive (once a month to back up- that's about 13 times I turned it on) and now it is dead. As much help as they are- they are equally a pain in the butt! Now I am looking for some one or some where to try and recover the data that won't cost a fortune. Also- I have 2 more just like this one- where do I back up all that information (I'm sure they will die as well- they are from the same company).

Eggplant Parmigiana...

eggplant (35k image)

I tried this for the first time tonight (Kay your recipe worked great!) Linda and I joined our local Growers' Alliance Community Supported Agricultural Program. Each week we go and pay $25.00 for $30-$35 dollars worth of fresh, locally grown produce, milk, eggs, meat, herbs... today we got an eggplant hence the dish. There was no bitterness and was very yummy. I also made a zucchini casserole because last week we got 5 zucchini and I did not get through them all. We also got heirloom tomatoes, onions, pepper relish, this week hot dogs (last week steaks which were SO tender)corn on the cob and home made hand lotion. It has definitely helped us eat more vegetables and ones we may not have eaten before.

When we joined the program we got a cookbook, two canvas bags to carry the groceries (instead of paper or plastic) a tee shirt and our annual membership. It has been fun.

Working hard...

workhard (127k image)
"She works hard for the money, so hard for it honey
she works hard for the money so you better treat her right."

Well seems like everyone is working hard...
I started back to school last week. Just got into my new school so was at school till 10:30 p.m. It's coming along. Students are back Wednesday so Tuesday and Thursday are late parent nights. One week back and I'm ready for a vacation! To top it off we are in a heat index of about 110 everyday which makes everything a little harder...and my new schools air is broke! I have discovered I sweat well and I also have a great deodorant. The worst part of this heat is it put our project on hold and would have been much easier while I was off. Now I'll be planting lots of plants on a cooler weekend.
Later today (when the sun comes up) we are going to the dinner theater to see "Oklahoma".
What's up with all of you?

Kansas City Weather...

323 (59k image)

A RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE...CURRENTLY CENTERED ACROSS THE LOWER
MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY HAS TRAPPED HOT AND HUMID AIR ACROSS THE MID
SECTION OF THE COUNTRY. THIS AIRMASS IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN PLACE
FOR AT LEAST THE NEXT FOUR DAYS ALLOWING THE HEAT TO BUILD UP ACROSS
THE REGION. THIS WILL RESULT IN THE HEAT INDEX READINGS DURING THE
AFTERNOON TO REACH AT OR ABOVE 105 DEGREES FOR SEVERAL HOURS.
EDITED: Heat index today 111...you melt when you go out!

All I can say is-it's HOT! I would like to follow Delaney and do a handstand in a pool.

Weekend in Osage Beach...

header_banner (17k image)

We took Ralph and Joann to Osage Beach for a weekend getaway at Ralph's request. We stayed at the Country Club Resort and Spa. We had deluxe suites which were very nice except for the bed which felt like a brick. We tried several new restaurants- The Heron- which had little under $50.00 and WAS THE WORST MEAL I HAVE EVER HAD!The next night we ate at J.B. Hooks and it was very good and much more reasonable. It also had a 14 mile view of the lake- outstanding experience. We went to the Main Street Music Hall . The Main Street Music Hall is a live music show that is now in its fourteenth season at the Lake of the Ozarks in Osage Beach, Missouri. The Music Hall offers a wide variety of musical enjoyment as well as comedy. The show consists of two hours of current and classic country, gospel, and patriotic songs as well as a trip through time with our medley of songs from the 1940’s through today. I was anticipating Hee Haw and this was very enjoyable and Ralph smiled through the whole show! They also have an outlet mall but it was pretty hot so we cut shopping short. When we were not out and about we were playing cards (Ralph's favorite past time) and they taught me how to play Pitch. I even won a set but get it confused with Euchre (wins hands, pitch wins points). We had a good time.
