One degree...a big difference

logo2dbw (5k image)

At 211 degrees, water is hot.
At 212 degrees, it boils.
And with boiling water, comes steam.
And with steam, you can power a train.
One degree.

Applying one extra degree of temperature to water means the difference between something that is simply very hot and something that generates enough force to power a machine - a beautifully uncomplicated metaphor that ideally should feed our every endeavor - consistently pushing us to make the extra effort in every task, action and effort we undertake.

Happy Halloween...

kamvamp (136k image)

Fact: Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first. People spend over $2.5 billion during Halloween on candies, costumes, decorations and parties.
Enjoy!

Well 20 years old and a 20 pound Salmon

100_0725 (735k image)

Needless to say spoke with Nick before he went to work as he is working night shift now and he went to Sodus Salmon fishing this morning and was besides himself when he caught the BIG one! A 20 lb female Salmon that had tons of eggs to get him through the remainder of the salmon fishing season. He was like a little kid he was so happy and excited. He does love the out doors! Yesterday morning he went on a tour of the old Seneca Army Depot for the White Deer as you can see from his shirt he bought and loved it and took many pictures and hope to see them soon. My wildlife child......GOTTA LOVE HIM.....and god how I do!

Clark on the IBEW Hour Power Video

ibew-powerhour (31k image)

My dad went to an IBEW convention in Cleveland and out of 4,000 delegates he was one of the ones chosen after the interviews to be placed in their "Faces in the Crowd" video! I told him it was probably because he sounded so intelligent comparred to others; but then again, I am pretty biased. Way to go Dad!

Watch the video. He's toward the end, but it's not a long video.

Something to start thinking about...

simplify (21k image)

To help you slow down during the winter and all other seasons as well, here are ten ways which you can use to achieve a quieter, slower pace to life.

1. Do One Thing At A Time: Perhaps the biggest accelerator to life is trying to do several things at the same time. If you focus on doing only one task at a time, you will begin to slow down. And this means stopping such dual activities as: driving and having phone conversations, eating and reading or watching television, jogging and listening to a walkman, etc.

2. Breathe: Moving your breathing rate to a slower pace will do wonders to slow down your body. Whenever the pace gets out of hand, you can always slow yourself back down by stopping and taking several deep breaths. There are several practices which teach calming breathing techniques as part of their routine, including yoga and the tai chi exercise pattern.

3. Sit Quietly, Do Nothing: This is perhaps the hardest thing on the list given our North American obsession with action. It may take practice. Once you are able to sit quietly and do nothing, practice clearing your mind and listening only to its silence. In effect, this is meditation. The practice is even more calming if you can find a place where noise and sounds are minimal. While you are at it, remember to breathe!

4. Listen To Music: Pick musical pieces that put you at ease. This eliminates most rock, jazz and country music. Classical and instrumental pieces are most likely to help you slow down, but, as musician/psychologist Steven Halpern points out, since music entrains the heart rate to its beat, music is not truly calming unless the beat is 60 or less per minute. At first such slow beats may seem unappealing. But that is just your body/mind in overdrive talking. Stick with it or use other musical pieces to gradually bring you to that pace.

5. Take A Walk: Walking for pleasure and relaxation is one of the best exercises for your body and mind. It helps relieve tensions, stimulate blood flow and develop a slower body rhythm. You may initially find yourself racing to get to where you are going. If so, consciously slow yourself down. And be sure to look at all that is around you, particularly plants and birds and the weather.

6. Take A Bath: Immersing the body in water has many calming qualities. Even if you are a shower person for body-cleansing purposes, the bath can be a cleanser for the mind. Enhance the calming experience with candlelight, some calming fragrances and perhaps some music. This is one of the few times when doing more than one thing at a time is good for you. But turn off the phone and other disturbances before you climb in the tub. If you can get into a tub with swirls and jets, do so. This can relax those tense muscles even more than just bathing.

7. Read: I don't mean here technical reports or the newspaper. Pick a light work of fiction, poetry, nature or spiritual writings, anything that is uplifting and relaxing to you. Loose yourself in the world created by the author.

8. Play Like A Child: Here, I do not mean sports where there is competition. Skating, shooting baskets, hitting golf balls, skiing — particularly cross-country — are okay if you can eliminate any desire for competition. There are a wide range of other play activities: colouring, dancing slowly and rhythmically to slow music, building with blocks or similar building toys, having a heart-to-heart talk with a doll or teddy bear. When children play they normally focus on the present and their single-minded activity and do so with joy and abandon.

9. Be Creative: Paint, draw, write, play a musical instrument, cook, work with wood, make pottery, sew, the list is endless. Do what you enjoy most, but do it with focus and without judgement of the process or product.

10. Seek Your Spirituality: This can range from attending the religious service of your choice — and really becoming engaged in its practice — to contemplating your place in the universe. The gods are in no hurry, why should you be?

Bonus: Cuddle: I truly think that this should be one of the prime ways, but the previous ten were directed toward activities that could be done alone. Sometimes slowing down requires alone time. But there is no better way to slow down than physically bonding with a loved one: spouse, partner, parent, child, grandchild, friend. And don't forget our furry friends: cuddling with a loved pet has been shown to significantly reduce heart rates and calm mental activities.

How to waste wisely your days...

inthewater (160k image)
" To awaken each morning with a smile brightening my face;
to greet the day with reverence for the opportunities it contains;
to approach my work with a clean mind;
to hold ever before me, even in the doing of little things,
the ultimate purpose toward which I am working;
to meet men and women with laughter on my lips and love in my heart;
to be gentle, kind, and courteous through all the hours;
to approach the night with weariness that ever woos sleep and
the joy that comes from work well done -
this is how I desire to waste wisely my days."

Another Change in Plans

We called to make reservations at Bellhurst and they cannot get a party as large as ours in until 1:30. We thought that was too late. We also found out that the price went up to $19. After calling several places and not finding another location that we thought was suitable for all, we have opted for brunch at Nana's. If you would like to bring a dish to pass it would be great, although not necessary. If you do bring a dish, just let us know what it will be so that we do not duplicate dishes. Time will be 11:30-12:00. I hope this does not dissapoint everyone too much... we were bummed, but we think we will still have fun and the food will be just as good (if not better). And then we can go out to Sue's for the Wild Witch/Warlock Ball. So we hope to see you Sunday!

Be the change you want to see in the world...

redmanifesto (170k image)

Every now and then- you can make a difference- and we should.
(RED) was created by Bono and Bobby Shriver to raise awareness and money for The Global Fund by teaming up with the world's most iconic brands to produce (PRODUCT) RED branded products. A percentage of each (PRODUCT) RED product sold is given to The Global Fund. The money helps women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. What's the meaning of the parentheses or brackets? Well, we call them "the embrace." Each company that becomes (RED) places its logo in this embrace and is then elevated to the power of red. Thus the name -- (PRODUCT) RED. Check it out here .

Fire Saftey...

firegirl (94k image)

* Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of the home, especially near sleeping areas.
* Smoke alarms should be kept clean of dust by regularly vacuuming over and around them.
* Replace batteries in smoke alarms at least once a year. And replace the entire unit after ten years of service, or as the manufacturer recommends.
* Families should plan and practice two escape routes from each room of their home.
* Regularly inspect the home for fire hazards.
* If there are adults in the home who smoke, they should use heavy safety ashtrays and discard ashes and butts in metal, sealed containers or the toilet.
* If there is a fireplace in the home, the entire opening should be covered by a heavy safety screen. The chimney should be professionally inspected and cleaned annually.
* Children should cook only under the supervision of an adult or with their permission.
* Children should never play with electrical cords or electrical sockets. They should ask adults for help plugging in equipment.
* Children should stay away from radiators and heaters, and they should be taught that these devices are not toys. Young children in particular must be taught not to play with or drop anything into space heaters. Nothing should be placed or stored on top of a heater.
* Pots on stovetops should always have their handles turned toward the center of the stove, where children cannot reach up and pull or knock them off.
* Teach children to turn off lights, stereos, TVs, and other electrical equipment when they are finished using them. In the case of room heaters, children should ask an adult to turn it off when the room will be empty.
* Children should never touch matches, lighters, or candles. If they find matches or lighters within reach, they should ask an adult to move them
* No one should stand too close to a fireplace or wood stove or other types of heaters, where clothes could easily catch fire.
Delaney learned about fire safety-you should too!

We also may have a change of plans... If we do the Wild Witch party this Sunday, Nana cannot come. So is anyone opposed to doing it next Sunday? It will be at Sue's house, although I am not sure what time. Pages for the Kids

Since I am coming home Thursday, I finished up a page for each of the young kids' scrapbooks. I know Lala has been anxious for me to share so here they are.

This came out so great! I have been dying to do these pics of Kam from a few years back. I hope he likes it!

dance-500 (74k image)

This one is much better looking in person. The pink is inked all the way around the edge and you can see it much better... it's practically non-existant on this smaller image. It also cut me "e" off a little. Oops.

SNOW-FUN-500 (84k image)

And this one came out so great too! There is a little library pocket in the front where a little 4-page book lies with some pictures of Delaney at that year's Christmas.

And I redid and finished the front page of Matthew's book. Here it is for those who want to peek. Kay, double check that I got the info correct this time so I can fix (if needed) before I come home. I am also bringing home a magnetic snap to fix his little folder. Kay, we'll have to get together at a time that is convenient for you or maybe you can bring his book to one of the events planned. We'll get it finished for you and Bob.

From the happy scrapper... I'll post more as they come!

Trees

Does anyone want my free trees from the National Arbor Day Foundation? I get 10 free trees with my membership. This is one charitable organization that I support (and can afford to support). Your trees come as little twigs that you have to plant and nurture, but they are trees to put in the ground! You can pick from a variety of trees. If you know of anyone else that wants them, that's fine too. I just need the address to send them to. I'm going to mail it out end of this week, so let me know by Friday. First come first server basis. To see the different trees, go to Arborday
and type in your zip code to see all the free trees they offer.

Proposed Fall Activities for next 2 Weekends

halloween-topper (69k image)

Fri., Oct. 13 (6:30-7:00 TBD) - Dinner Birthday Celebration for Nana at the Club

Saturday, Oct. 14 - Kelly's girls' soccer games at Bishop Kearney
- Kenny and Kameron's football games (location? and time?)

Sun., Oct. 15, or Sat., Oct. 21, or Sun., Oct. 22 - 1st Annual Wild Witches Ball
We need to know what dates work best for you b/c we would like everyone to come. We are also still trying to determine the location.

We would like to invite everyone to attend the first annual Wild Witches Ball, with dinner, treats and activities. We are planning to bake holiday cookies, make caramel apples, have cider/mulled cider, tell ghost stories, watch movies with the kids (Worst Witch and Hocus Pocus are a must), and we will also provide pumpkins for carving. Witch hats and boas will be provided for the ladies.

This is tradition of the Culver household that we would like to extend and share year after year with the whole family. This started when Beth and I were little and we would watch the Worst Witch over and over again. Even after college, I would visit Beth in Rochester with my mom and we would bake cookies with our witch hats on while watching our silly flick.

Sunday, October 22 (11:30 a.m.) - Culvers having Brunch at the Bellhurst to celebrate Clark's birthday
All are welcome to join. Brunch costs $15 a person for anyone who would like to come.

List of other suggested activities for other weekend days (depending upon the best date chosen above): Corn Maize in Macedon, Wine Tour (Seneca or Cayuga trails), and Watkins Glenn. With any of these events, it was also proposed to do a possible tailgating party to eat and have fun. Let my mom know or write on here and let us know what everyone would like to do. We would love to spend the time with you.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month...

breastcancer (110k image)

Two Decades of Success...
For more than 20 years, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) has educated women about early breast cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment. NBCAM continues reaching out to women with several key messages, most notably, the importance of early detection through annual mammography screening for women over 40, or earlier for women at increased risk.

Mammography screenings are a woman's best chance for detecting breast cancer early. When coupled with new treatment options, mammography screenings can significantly improve a woman's chances of survival. We are pleased that our efforts have contributed to more women than ever participating in mammography screening. Independent reports indicate that this has been instrumental in the increase in the survival rate for women with breast cancer.

Taking it to the Next Level...
Now, in an effort to further increase our impact, we are seeking to take our activities to the next level - encouraging all women to take charge of their own breast health. Whether it includes practicing regular self-breast exams or making sure to schedule an annual mammogram, every little bit counts.

Strawberry Pie...

1 small package (1.1 oz) sugar-free Cook and Serve vanilla pudding
2 cups water
1 small package (0.3 oz) sugar-free strawberry Jell-O
4 cups sliced strawberries
In a medium saucepan, stir together water and pudding mix. Heat to a boil. Remove from heat and immediately add the Jell-O. Stir until dissolved. Set the pan aside and let the mixture cool to room temperature.
Place strawberries in the bottom of a deep dish pie plate (or use a crust, we used shortbread premade). Pour cooled pudding mixture over the strawberries. Refrigerate until chilled. Let it set well before slicing. Add sugar free cool whip on top.

6 points for the entire pie

Variations: I have had this with peach pie as well- it was very good and you change pudding to match fruit. Also- the ladies who made it for our health group used the microwave- you put in the pudding until it boiled around edges, take it out and add jello, put back in until it boils around the edges again. They say it is easier.

Jury Rigged...

Here's a new twist scammers are using to commit identity theft: the jury duty scam. Here's how it works:
The scammer calls claiming to work for the local court and claims you've failed to report for jury duty. He tells you that a warrant has been issued for your arrest.
The victim will often rightly claim they never received the jury duty notification. The scammer then asks the victim for confidential information for "verification" purposes.
Specifically, the scammer asks for the victim's Social Security number, birth date, and sometimes even for credit card numbers and other private information — exactly what the scammer needs to commit identity theft.
So far, this jury duty scam has been reported in Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington state.
It's easy to see why this works. The victim is clearly caught off guard, and is understandably upset at the prospect of a warrant being issued for his or her arrest. So, the victim is much less likely to be vigilant about protecting their confidential information.
In reality, court workers will never call you to ask for social security numbers and other private information. In fact, most courts follow up via snail mail and rarely, if ever, call prospective jurors.
Action: Never give out your Social Security number, credit card numbers or other personal confidential information when you receive a telephone call.
This jury duty scam is the latest in a series of identity theft scams where scammers use the phone to try to get people to reveal their Social Security number, credit card numbers or other personal confidential information.
It doesn't matter *why* they are calling — all the reasons are just different variants of the same scam.
Protecting yourself is simple: Never give this info out when you receive a phone call.

Nature...

Nature (214k image)

Here is a page I finished for Delaney- the tag states, "The world is but a canvas to the imagination". The left side is all brown- don't know why it scanned green. Here is Delaney playing with sticks, mulch and rocks. The smile is because she sees her mother coming! I am now working on the Brooklyn Bridge and Kameron's art.

10- common sense suggestions ...

yummy (244k image)
Yes, you can have your cake and eat it, too! Enjoy and stay healthy!

1. Read all package labels very carefully. You don't want to add unknown fats and sugars to your diet.
2. Try the milk step-down. If a recipe calls for cream, try whole milk. If it calls for whole milk, try 2 percent and so on.
3. Use less whole eggs. If a recipe calls for 3 eggs, try using 1 whole egg and two egg whites.
4. In baking, substitute 1 cup of applesauce for 1 cup of margarine or butter. For better results, don't substitute all of the fat for applesauce just half or less of it.
5. Substitute artificial sweeteners for sugar. This will work in many recipes. There are so many to
choose from these days be sure to choose just the right one for your recipe.
6. Variety is the spice of life. When making low fat or low sugar desserts make sure there are plenty of good flavors.
7. Make all your own desserts. You'll know exactly what's in them.
8. Literally save room for dessert. Save your fat calories for dessert.
9. Share your dessert. You'll save half the calories.
10. Eat any desserts you desire. Unless you've been otherwise medically advised, why not? Just eat them occasionally, once a month or week.

Some of the things I do at work...

whirledpeace (186k image)

Her are my Pinwheels for peace in my window, they were for International Peace Day (September 21) and here are the students pinwheels. It was a lot of fun to watch them plant them outside or on the board and write about what peace means to them.
We have a "Peace Maker" of the month, September was John F. Kennedy and we will get up October who is Jimmy Carter. This bulletin board is one of the kids favorites, it is of the playground when we catch them being good. They love to look for their picture. We just started a new incentive program for the buses...it is called peaceful ride. Then we also have our playground rules bulletin board.
While we are at it...I also do an attendance bulletin board and charms for perfect attendance. The kids love to count the classroom stars for class attendance (see all the little finger prints). I put up the stars each day. Last thing, we had an assembly today- the PTA is selling wrapping paper- they had some of us model outfits made of wrapping paper. I was taking mine off when they wanted a picture- oh the things we do!

BITCHOLOGY...

krishat (197k image)

When I stand up for myself and my beliefs,they call me a bitch.
When I stand up for those I love, they call me a bitch.
When I speak my mind, think my own thoughts or do things my own way, they call me a bitch.
Being a bitch means I won't compromise what's in my heart. It means I live my life MY way.
It means I won't allow anyone to step on me. When I refuse to tolerate injustice and speak against it, I am defined as a bitch
The same thing happens when I take time for myself instead of being everyone's maid, or when I act a little selfish. It means I have the courage and strength to allow myself to be who I truly am and won't become anyone else's idea of what they think I "should" be. I am outspoken, opinionated and determined I want what I want and there is nothing wrong with that!
So try to stomp on me, try to douse my inner flame, try to squash every ounce of beauty I hold within me. You won't succeed.

And if that makes me a bitch , so be it.
I embrace the title and am proud to bear it

B - Babe
I - In
T - Total
C - Control of
H - Herself

B = Beautiful
I = Intelligent
T = Talented
C = Charming
H = Hell of a Woman

B = Beautiful
I = Individual
T = That
C = Can
H = Handle anything

Kris sent this and I liked it! So I posted her picture proudly and embrace her philosphy whole heartedly.

May the wings of the butterfly kiss the sun
And find your shoulder to light on,
To bring you luck, happiness and riches
