Sarah's Graduation


For those that would like to mark their calendar we received a letter in the mail that Geneva High Graduation will be different this year due to conflicts with the Smith Opera House. Commencement will be on Saturday, June 28th at 10:30 in the morning. I am trying to set up a party at the Red Brick for her on Sunday the 29th but someone else asked for it two weeks ago I guess so have an option for Saturday afternoon but nothing in stone. Will keep all informed.

Cinnamon-Roasted Almonds...


PREP TIME 15 Min
COOK TIME 1 Hr
READY IN 1 Hr 15 Min

INGREDIENTS

* 1 egg white
* 1 teaspoon cold water
* 4 cups whole almonds
* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees F (120 degrees C). Lightly grease a 10x15 inch jellyroll pan.
2. Lightly beat the egg white; add water, and beat until frothy but not stiff. Add the nuts, and stir until well coated. Mix the sugar, salt, and cinnamon, and sprinkle over the nuts. Toss to coat, and spread evenly on the prepared pan.
3. Bake for 1 hour in the preheated oven, stirring occasionally, until golden. Allow to cool, then store nuts in airtight containers.

Tuesday, November 27th

Beer Cheese...

Ingredients:
2 pounds sharp Cheddar cheese -- at room temp.
2 cloves garlic -- mashed
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dry mustard
Tabasco to taste
1/2 bottle beer -- or more as rec.
1 teaspoon salt -- to taste

Directions:
Cut the cheese into cubes and place them in a food processor or electric mixer. Process until perfectly smooth. Add the garlic, Worcestershire, mustard, and Tabasco. Blend well. Add the beer, a little at a time, while continuing to beat the cheese, until the mixture is a good, firm spreading consistency. (Too much beer will make the cheese too fluffy.) Stir in the salt, and refrigerate. (This is a superb keeper.) Serve on small slices of rye or pumpernickel bread. Delicious with cold, cold beer. Serves 15 to 20

August Rush...two thumbs up!

Need a pick me up, feel good, good music...go see August Rush...predictable but still worth it.

You might not have enough patience to take a storybook and read a tale from beginning to the end, even though you could find it some pleasurable experience. If reading doesn’t appeal to you, there’s a cinematographic fairytale available.

“August Rush” is an extremely romantic depiction of love, with a series of coincidences that make you think that the inexorability of destiny and life cannot be hindered by anything, be it parents or years of absence.

The movie starts with the premise of “Romeo And Juliet”, two youngsters fall in love, but are separated by her father (and here ends the resemblance with the Shakespearian play). The two, Louis Connelly (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and Lyla Novacek (Keri Russell) share the love for music and a special talent in it, he is an Irish guitarist and she is a cellist. And their child, August Rush (Freddie Highmore) will be a prodigious musician, but neither his parents will know that, as Louis will be completely separated from his sweetheart, never knowing that he has a son and Lyla will be told that the baby died.

August grows up in a home for boys and is taken care of Wizard (Robin Williams), constantly augmenting his special talent in music. He has the strong belief that his aptitude will help find his parents and guess what! He will! Oops, that was a surprise, but it’s not like nobody isn’t expecting that!

Let the decorating begin...

Well Delaney went to Nana's this weekend to help her decorate for Christmas. Look how well they trimmed the tree!
Here is a picture of mom's new hutch. The piece is beautiful as is the decorations (the Farley touch). Here is the piece across the room. Love how they match and blend with the table. Christmas in the DiSanto house would not be complete without the stockings. This year the big hit is the village, Delaney and Kelsie think it is a lot of fun playing with the people. Last, a look up the stairs- and we wonder why everyone likes to go home for the holidays- it's always so festive and so beautiful. Good job to all who chipped in.

Pumpkin Roll...

INGREDIENTS
• 3 eggs
• 1 cup white sugar
• 2/3 cup solid pack pumpkin puree
• 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1 cup chopped pecans
• confectioners' sugar for dusting

• 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
• 4 tablespoons butter
• 1 cup confectioners' sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• confectioners' sugar for dusting

DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10x15 inch jellyroll pan.
2. In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar with an electric mixer on high speed for five minutes. Gradually mix in pumpkin. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and ginger; stir into the pumpkin mixture. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan. Sprinkle pecans over the top of the batter.
3. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the center springs back when touched. Loosen edges with a knife. Turn out on foil that have been dusted with confectioners' sugar. Roll up cake using foil, and let cool for about 20 minutes.
4. In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, butter, 1 cup confectioners' sugar, and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Unroll pumpkin cake when cool, spread with filling, and roll up. Place pumpkin roll on a long sheet of waxed paper, and dust with confectioners' sugar. Wrap cake in waxed paper, and twist ends of waxed paper like a candy wrapper. Refrigerate overnight. Serve chilled; before slicing, dust with additional confectioners' sugar.

Well Sarah received a call from Keuka College today to inform her that she has been accepted. She is very happy and excited as this is the only place she has wanted to go to further her education since 10th grade. She will be getting dual certification for Early Childhood Education Birth to Grade 2 with Special Education in Psychology and Sign Language. Just wanted to share the great news.

Special Thanks and Moving Update


I wanted to thank all the people who helped with my move: Kris, Mark, Kevin, my friend Guy, Beth, Matty, and my work collegue Anthony. Without your help I could not have moved easily, and it really helped my parents who helped with the first move (thank you to you too!). With the six of us that were in Richmond we packed the truck in a record 2-2.5 hours! We were psyched! Mark thankfully drove the truck for us, as Kris and I were too nervous to attempt a large beast like that. He did a fine job! Beth also ran and got us lunch from pizza hut while we got the truck, and everyone chipped in for dinner on the way home which certainly helped me after spending so much on the move. Sunday we unloaded and Mark and Matty were a huge help putting together my new bed (pictures to come soon). The guys were beat (us little ladies had to let the men to the heavy lifting), although we were tired too going up one flight of stairs with so many boxes. And I was informed by all that I need a new hobby as all of the boxes labeled "scrap" were very heavy (books, paper, etc.)... Guy suggested collecting feather quills. LOL! I still have a lot of boxes to unpack and the place is somewhat of a disaster, but my parents come Wednesday night to spend Thanksgiving with me and help get things in order.

Once I get everything settled after the holidays, I'll either cook a big meal or take everyone out to thank you all properly. I have already told Kev that I will help him paint when he is ready and offered to help Mark if he ever moves. I have plenty of favors to repay back and I intend to whenever possible, so please do not hesitate to let me know.

I am especially indebted to Aunt Kris and the girls for letting me stay at their house for so long and making me a part of their immediate family! I am thankful for the time I got to spend with you and the girls and hope that we will continue to have our wine and sushi nights from time to time, and maybe a girls sleepover soon. I have the best family in the world and I never once doubted that! Thank you so much for everything!

We take so many things for granted and concentrate so much on the ownership of things that something that seems to have importance one moment, suddenly loses its luster the next. Perhaps it lies at the foundation of each of our beings, found in the basic structure of who each of us are: our values and beliefs, our hopes and dreams, our ideals and our passions.

We are what we value and what we believe of ourselves. We are capable of as much or as little as we lead ourselves to believe. We make choices every day, we live everyday, and in grief, a little of us dies every day. Great American Smokeout --- November 15, 2007

In 2006, approximately 45.3 million (one in five) U.S. adults were current smokers. November 15, 2007, marks the American Cancer Society's 31st annual Great American Smokeout, an event designed to encourage cigarette smokers to quit smoking for at least 1 day so that they might quit permanently. Smoking cessation has substantial and immediate health benefits for men and women of all ages.

When smokers quit:
* 20 minutes after quitting: Your heart rate and blood pressure drops.
* 12 hours after quitting: The carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal.
* 2 weeks to 3 months after quitting: Your circulation improves and your lung function increases.
* 1 to 9 months after quitting: Coughing and shortness of breath decrease; cilia (tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs) regain normal function in the lungs, increasing the ability to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce the risk of infection.
* 1 year after quitting: The excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smoker's.
* 5 years after quitting: Your stroke risk is reduced to that of a nonsmoker 5 to 15 years after quitting.
* 10 years after quitting: The lung cancer death rate is about half that of a continuing smoker's. The risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, esophagus, bladder, cervix, and pancreas decrease.
* 15 years after quitting: The risk of coronary heart disease is that of a non-smoker's.

Today, an estimated 45 million US adults smoke. Tobacco use can cause lung cancer, as well as other cancers, heart disease, and lung disease. Smoking is responsible for 1 in 3 cancer deaths, and 1 in 5 deaths from all causes. Another 8.6 million people are living with serious illnesses caused by smoking.

Secondhand smoke is classified as a "known human carcinogen" (cancer-causing agent) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the US National Toxicology Program, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a branch of the World Health Organization. Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds. More than 60 of these are known or suspected to cause cancer.

Simple Life...

Ralph was a simple man, a farmer. He pinched his pennies, ate from the dollar menu (a simple hamburger), coffee, cigarettes (yuck) and cards filled his life. He got excited over grits and pepper mint candy.He loved John Deere tractors and still owned his 1949 A model tractor. Last night at the wake- hundreds of people came- farmers in the coveralls, people from the Swiss Lodge, Lions club, family and friends. Here was this simple man surrounded by so much love- should we all be able to have the same in our lives.I think I'd take a simple life.
A simple life is all about choices. Choices like:
- living in the country rather than the city
- dining in rather than dining out
- renting a movie rather than going to a theater
- finding your passion rather than working at a job
- living within your means rather than spending as a means to escape reality
- questioning your 'needs' rather than just buying your 'wants'
- buying used articles or products rather than buying new
- making your gifts rather than buying gifts
- enjoying the simple things in life rather than taking them for granted!
Funny how death makes you contemplate your life.

* The wake for Ralph was yesterday and the funeral today- I forgot how long this process is.
* JoAnn got a house Saturday- it is beautiful, 4 years old and if she didn't buy it- Linda and I would have!
* Sue took the kids to a water park this weekend while daddy was away- they had a blast.
* Kris and the gang caught up with the boys and they all had sushi...

Pizza...from scratch

Thin Crust Pizza Recipe

1 .25oz package of quick rise yeast
3/4 cup boiling water

Let the yeast dissolve in the hot, hot water for 8 minutes. While it's doing that - mix up the dry ingredients.

1 3/4 cup flour (works well with whole wheat flour, too)
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp white sugar (I usually use a little more)

Mix this stuff with the water/yeast combo after the 8 minutes and knead for 3 minutes or so until you can pull it into a great pizza shape.

Add delicious toppings and bake at 500 degrees for about 15 minutes or until your cheese is how you like it. Voila!

North Carolina Halloween...

Halloween was a ball! I sat outsie with my aunt drinking wine and giving candy to the kids. They were so cute! My cousins joined us, as well as some neighbors and we sat around the firepit having a blast. Kris and I also brought our new boyfriends, Bones and Scully, pictured above. Gotta love Halloween. Hope yours was safe and enjoyable.

Crazy week...


The house Joann wanted fell through- they failed to disclose the sewage debt ($10,000) so she will be looking outside our neighborhood.

And on a sad note- Ralph passed away today. I am glad from the standpoint he was in pain and discomfort but as always, sad for the loss. Keep Linda and her family in your prayers.

My cable is out at home- I can not upload- cable company came out today and they have to replace outside cables so what I do post is from school. Hope it will be fixed soon.
